Rodent Prevention Tips For Phoenix & The Valley of the Sun

Phoenix, AZ Sunset Skyline

Living in Phoenix comes with so many advantages: the great weather, affordable prices, friendly residents, activities galore, and close proximity to other areas in the Southwest, like Las Vegas and San Diego. However, even here, there are unexpected problems that can occur in and around your property. One of these problems is a rodent infestation. Rodents have a bad rap and for good reason. They’re disease carrying, destructive creatures.

Rodents, such as rats and mice, pose serious health risks and can carry diseases like hantavirus, leptospirosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, Tularemia, and Salmonella, for example. They can also do tremendous damage to your property. They chew through walls, electrical wire, and basically anything. In fact, a rat’s jaws are so powerful, they can chew through metal and bricks. Their droppings, which they leave everywhere, are probably something you and your family would rather not encounter.

Life can quickly turn from ease and peacefulness to anxiety and stress during the onset of a rodent infestation. At Buzz Tech, we understand and have helped thousands of Phoenix residents get rid of rodent infestations or prevent them in the first place. We’re here to help you, too.

If you live in the Valley of Sun, we recommend using the following tips to keep rodents away from your property to keep you, your family, your pets, and your guests safe. Many of these preventative measures also apply to commercial properties, which Buzz Tech also services.

Create a Rodent Repellent Yard

Rodents, especially rats, are smarter than you think. These little guys will use anything to hide in or under while they patiently wait to get closer and closer to your house and quietly slip inside. To keep rodents off your outdoor property follow these tips:

  • Clear away bushes and thick brush where rodents can hide
  • Do not keep pet dishes (water and food) outside
  • If you and your family like to eat outside, be sure all food crumbs are picked up
  • Remove standing water such as bird baths
  • Keep garbage bins covered

Regularly Inspect Entry Ways

Rats are great at getting inside your house and they will look for anyway to squeeze right in. For this reason, it’s important to inspect your entryways – doors, windows, frames, the roof – for any signs of holes, damage, or cracks that allows rodents into your home now or in the future. If you find any problems, get them fixed right away. Our friendly technicians can help you with this.

Keep a Clean House

Dirty, cluttered homes attract all sorts of pests, including rodents. If food is laying around in the sink or on the floor (unless you have a dog to vacuum it up right after dinner), rodents will be able to smell it, even if they’re outside your home. Also, avoid eating in areas of the house other than the kitchen. Food crumbs in bedrooms and other areas may go unnoticed by you, but it won’t by rodents.

If a rodent smells food in you home and finds a way in, they will immediately look for a place to hide. Clutter is their friend. Keep a clutter free home and if a rodent ever does get inside, it will be easier to find. Otherwise, the clutter provides the perfect nesting ground for these creatures.

Keep Your Garage Closed

Again, rats love places to hide and will use your garage as a stepping point to get into your home where there’s food, water, and a safe, warm place to multiply. We’re not saying to always have your garage closed, but to not keep it open for prolonged periods of time.
